This is why there is so much chemtrails in our skies! We are using to much free solar energy for some guys...

Building a few small solar heaters for my farm animals. It will be rarely used here in Louisiana, but cold snaps do happen, and i really don't like heat lamps around animal bedding.

Use mirror mounts to attach the windows (like the ones yo use to attach a 4' mirror to a door for example). Less chance of breaking things and easier to maintain or replace the windows. Is a permit needed for those?

Seriously have you ever take temperature measure in/out during winter day... it seem really a bad idea! I guess the air come back colder than the house air🤣🤣🤣

Couldn't this be built in the window? Seems like we wouldn't loose so much heat in the process. I really love this with the dry vent pipe! Saving cans for this endeavor is taking far too long.

I'm building something similar to this design. Items I used are: 36×72 frame from 2x6s backed with 3/4 in ply .5 inch insulation sheet 24' black aluminum flex duct 90 degree plastic elbows 2-8' flex duct for in and out piping to house 4" inline duct motor with speed control. 2 glass sheets Everything is black in the box. I plan on 2-45 degree mirrors to help deflect the sun in to max out exposure as well. I'll eventually convert to solar powered blower, just need a deep cycle battery to hook to a large power converter I got for free. Hopefully I'll get a video up showing specs and temps. It will be piped through a window with blower pumping up, while intake line will feed closer to the floor.

I know your wife discouraged you from putting in a realistic permanent hole like the kind used for a dryer vent, but think it really would look a thousand times better if the pipe came of the furnace and turned directly through the wall. Those return lines could be plumbed and buried the multiple other sides of the house . This would cause the heat to travel toward those other rooms.

I have a better one. Use the same type box, but make a hole in the top and the bottom of the back panel. The bottom hole goes through the rim joist and into the basement. The top hole goes where ever you like. You need a small fan, about the size used on a desktop computer, and a thermostat. Set the thermostat at about 90 degrees and couple it to the fan. When the sun hits the box, even on a very cold day, it will take less than 20 minutes for the fan to start. If you have a stinky, moldy basement, this is not a good idea. But if it is reasonably clean, you will have a good, nearly free source of heat while the sun shines. This also helps to remove moisture from the basement. Everybody should have one of these.

A note to anyone who wants to try this: The return air line needs to be as large as the hot air line. Both have to be insulated. The collector box needs to be insulated. Otherwise you’ll just be collecting heat and radiating it back into the outside air.

Let's do a little back of the envelope calculation using some kindergarten thermodynamics. Your heat captured, "Q" equals the mass flow rate of your working fluid times its specific heat times the change in temperature. Q=m*C*deltaT. 37 cfm,(which is a VERY optimistic estimate for one of those fans) is approximately 2.5 lbs/min or 150 lbs/hour. The specific heat of air is .24Btus/lb so with a 25 degree rise in temperature you are capturing a whopping 900 Btu/hr or the equivalent of about 264 Watts. To put that in perspective, you would get as much heat in your house from three 75W light bulbs, a laptop computer, or a TV set. At $.15/kWhr that's "THEORETICALLY" about 4 cents of energy per hour of operation. Lets say you can get this for an average of 4 hours a day, about 60 days a year, (again, an extremely optimistic estimate for Oregon), you COULD save $9.5/year so that's more like a 5-6 year pay back. And this doesn't even take into account the heat you will lose by compromising the air tight integrity of your window which would likely make this a net energy loss from your building envelope. I am a huge proponent of solar energy applications, especially homegrown applications, but this is little more than a fun experiment with no practical value. Capt. Carter, www.shipofimagination.com

Hope everyone realizes the tubing should be black to absorb the most heat from the sun. The reflective tubing will reflect most of the heat. Why do you think the best windshield heat guards are reflective. Why do you think the same thing used to heat water has black tubing? Good execution but missed one major thing. He could also magnify the heat by using a parabolic lense to focus the sun light.
